"After Earth," in which the Smiths played a father-and-son team stranded on post-apocalyptic Earth, was roundly panned by critics and was one of the year's biggest bombs, bringing $60.5 million on an estimated production budget of $130 million.
"After 'Earth' comes out, I get the box office numbers on Monday and I was devastated for about 24 minutes, and then my phone rang and I found out my father had cancer," he said. "That put it in perspective — viciously."
Smith's next movie, "Focus," is set to open Feb. 27.
