During the 1920's there where a lot of Black filmmakers making race movies. When sound came in the late 1930's Oscar Michaux recycled all this silent films and made talkies. The Black audience paid less monies to see Black race films compared to White films made by major studies. Once applauded the press turned the press and the people against Oscar Michaux films for various reasons. Also doing this time Black actors/comedians: Hattie McDonald, Stepin Fetchit, Amos & Andy were lauded in late 40's to early 50's. (Note : It was the NAACP that turned audience against these 2 of these entertainers (maybe 3 but had a change of heart later). In the 60's their was Sidney Poitier usually the only Black playing with a all white cast. I disagree with this articles on so many levels. The author of this article is focusing on 3 films that deals with the past of African American history in very different spectrums. I am happy that Weinstein and all the producers who want made it happen to tell the stories of African American experience regardless how sad and painful. There is a entire generation now nothing about the African American experience because the history books are removing them from the school books and teachers are not discussing it in class. I don't understand why the author is focusing on those 3 films when African Americans have other options as well: Baggage Claim, Fruitvale Station, Temptation, Big Words, Think Like A Man etc. Do I think it is Renaissance? Yes, and I am happy the doors are opening up again and we as Black people have to stop complaining and trying to censorship the stories other Black filmmakers decide to tell. You don't see the Jews complaining every time a story about the holocaust is told? You don't see Caucasian complaining every time their is a story like American Pie or is made?
